Antonio Berni (Argentina, 1905-1981)


He began his studies in Rosario, winning a scholarship in 1925 to travel to Europe, where he joined the Grupo de París and embraced Surrealism. Back in Argentina in 1930, he became interested in muralism and founded the Mutualidad Popular de Estudiantes y Artistas de Rosario [Popular Mutual Benefit Society for Students and Artists of Rosario] in 1934. He focused on social realism reflecting on then-current issues, and later integrated hyperrealism and photographic realism. He was appointed as a member of Academia Nacional de Bellas Artes in 1979.
