Victor Vasarely (Hungary,1906-France,1997)
One of the pioneers of optical and kinetic art, his work is epitomized by merging painting with geometry, using vibrant shapes and colors to create optical illusions. In 1929 he studied at Mühely – a Bauhaus-influenced school – in Budapest. He arrived in Paris in 1930 and worked in advertising. Motivated by Surrealism and Cubism, he reached abstraction in 1947. He won many awards, the Guggenheim Fellowship among them. He established the Vasarely Foundation and took part in important exhibitions.
