José Gurvich (Lithuania, 1927-United States, 1971)


He migrated to Montevideo in 1932. He studied at Escuela Nacional de Bellas Artes with José Cúneo, joined the Torres García Workshop in 1945 and became one of its key members. He took part in exhibitions and murals, also working as a set designer and illustrator. He lived at the Kibbutz Ramot Menasche in Israel, where he made a mural in 1954. Back in Montevideo, he settled in the Cerro neighborhood and led two workshops. He had shows in Uruguay and Israel and in 1970 he moved to New York, where he got reunited with his colleagues from Torres García’s workshop and other Latin American artists.
