Alicia Penalba (Argentina, 1913-France, 1982)
She began her studies at Escuela Superior de Bellas Artes Ernesto de la Cárcova. She trained as a sculptor in Paris with Ossip Zadkine, influenced by Brancusi, Arp and Giacometti. She began to create abstract sculptures in 1951 and she presented totemic bronzes in her first solo show in 1957. She won the Grand Prize at the São Paulo Biennial (1961) and was included in the second and third Documenta. She stood out for her architectural collaboration and for creating monumental works in Switzerland and Japan. Her sculptures are included in important museum collections such as Centre Pompidou, Hirshhorn Museum and Museo Nacional de Bellas Artes de Buenos Aires.
